Phos-Reactor

I just got a new phosphate reactor (Kent Marine). I know how I'm going to install it and where but I'm unsure what type of media I should use. I could always use carbon if necessary and a phosphate absorbing sponge but I'm questioning the effectiveness. I have a few really strong powerheads I could use but I'm not sure what is necessary or redundant.

A too strong of powerhead could mean too short of contact time but a too weak one may not be beneficial either.

My question is: what type of filter media would work best? Also, even though it's a phos-reactor, is it possible to use it as a calcium reactor also?

I would use it for FE based granulated media,.. like phosban or something,.. Using this type of media though it is essential that you use a very low flow power head, and turn the knob down so that the media on the top barley moves.

No,.. You can't use it as a CA reactor without signifagant modifacations.

I would also not run Phosban and Carbon in the same filter.

I use Seachem's phosguard and Matrix carbon individually. They sell 'sea gel' which is those two combined. I really like them.

Another good phos media is PhosBan and another good carbon is Black Diamond.
