Petco

I bought a polyp from Petco that never opened. Unfortunately, in order to get an exchange/return, I had to work with the district manager. He called yesterday, and to make a long story short, he gave me the return.

I had a long talk with him regarding their livestock issues. In my store (which is new), the tanks are full of dead fish, bubble algae, red cyno (they are still cycling), two lionfish gasping at the surface, lethargic fish, visibly diseased fish...its ridiculous. This is a business, isn't it? In the end, he was defending their husbandy practices. I told him to log onto any reef site and post a message asking about Petco livestock. I wonder if he will follow through. I would love to see Petco make improvements here, as this is one expensive hobby and their prices are often very good! Wouldn't it be wonderful if Petco became a dependable source for fish?

I've purchased snails there, and a few corals. Outside of the one that never opened, I've had good luck. Last night, I went in for my return and ended up purchasing a brilliant blue, giant clam. Sometimes they have some real gems...however, if they don't do something about their techniques, I don't see myself purchasing fish in the near future...Has anyone had any experience with them?

To me it seems when Petco opens a new store, they have good variety of stock and good water practices as time goes I understand the budget goes away and all of their purchases are based on sales. and not much goes into water quality. As water quality diminishes so do the fish and therefore sales decrease and no budget for more fish.

i think petco sucks! There are at least 3 petco's in my area and I've been to all of them at one time or another. THey consistently have more dead and diseased fish than alive and healthy ones. I don't go there anymore on principle, even if they do have cheap fish sometimes. They are cruel to animals and just plain don't know what they're doing.

To Petco's credit a while ago someone at the store in Idaho Falls decided to not stock any salt water livestock at all, though they have substrates and some food and supplies as well as salt to keep me going.

Well it's really not fair to tear down every store, We have a few guys here that started in pet co or petsmart here and both are some really top notch and really know whats up in this hobbie. The store may tie them up as far as what to and not to stock or order but I think You can find good people working in them. Tell You what I hate is Walmart.
