perc bully

Well my female perc finally bullied my last firegobie to death.Woke up the other morning and no gobie. Waited........waited......waited.....yup no gobie. Usually takes a sec for them to come out but nope. And no trace of him! I mean I got lots of space through the back to look through and I mean noth'in!!! He had to have died at night cuz I saw him bolt for his hole when the lights went off but he never came out!! Got lots of hermits small and big with a ALWAYS HUNGRY GREEDY CLEANER SHRIMP!!!(I swear he's a gluton it's rediculous) So chalked it up to the darned percs and me for stick'in em together!!! Well a lesson learned for me. Wiered thing is they had been together for at least a year with no problems and then the two droped with'in less of a month of each other. A Pic of the culprit!!!!!! I love this picture and now I have to use it as a mug shot

I ask who was first as it is likely a territrial issue if the clown was first. They can be agressive fish even biting the hand that feeds them, litteraly.

My small GSM(male) always makes it a point to bite me when my hand is in the tank, no matter if I get close to him or not. My domino damsels do the same thing..

Its their territory... your invading it.

My Female GSM has also killed 2 percs... one my fault.. the other the wifes.

Well the gobies were in first then the female perc, then the male perc which paired up with the female almost instantly(that was a relief) but the female has been the only agressive fish in the tank. Shes also the largest fish in the tank though which could play a dominace roll here. Anyway like I said, the firegobies were in first and then the percs. I HAD a madarin that was do'in fine till he got a gill infection and died but the female perc used to nip at the dragonet which I think added to stress and his death! I really like my two percs and am getting attached to them, which is bad cuz I got a new tank to set up and need to make desisions on whats go'in in! I want to do an anemone ( Heteractis magnifica or Stichodactyla gigantea) and my percs with some coral or it's gonna be looooots of coral and some small fish here and there.Anybody have got tank setup opinions

That's the best looking mug shot I've ever seen.

While clowns are young, they can get along with other fish just fine. As they mature, they get more and more territorial.

If you're setting the tank up from scratch, it would be best to design it so that you don't need to use power heads or HOB filters. With the species you listed, it would probably be best to invest in valves to place in the return line, that alternate the flow to different discharges. A good quality light fixture is a must, as I'm sure you already know.
In my opinion, it is best to use MH lighting for sea anemones. It's not that T5's or other lighting can't provide enough power. It is the point source of light that MH provides. This makes it much easier for the anemone to find an area of the tank that provides the lighting it wants. It also makes it less likely that the anemone will wander the tank.

thats kinda what I felt was go'ing on. She was pretty doscile for the begin'ing and now she's a real force to recon with. Although she dos'nt bite or nip at me like my bicolor did, she kinda just bumps into me here and there and seems not to mind my hand at all, swiming in and out of my fingers, rhe male is still young yet to trust me I think but the female can't get enough of my hand it's very odd (thats why I'm think'in ANEMONE!!) But just go's to show I still got the charm for the ladies LOL......thanx EC! I got that pic on my phone can ya believe that, but thats the only non blurry pic of her that I got but I was pretty proud of myself and amazed that I got a good one, and thanx for the info on the anemone man!!!

AHHH HAAA!! I knew there was a way to keep them from wandering to much! Yes I am not satisfied with T5's although they are very nice but as you stated they are a "Point Light source" which makes a whole lot of difference. What is a HOB filter and how would I go about facilitating water flow without powerheads. I am looking at tunze waveboxes and closed loop systems but is this what u are taking about for water movement

HOB stands for hang on back filter.

If you search this site or any other like it, you will find countless threads where someones anemone got sucked into a power head or similar device. It has happened to me more times than I care to admit. In my opinion, the ideal anemone tank would have a large return pump that fed several different discharges. A set of valves to alternate the flow between discharges, and a large overflow that could handle the volume of water moving through the system. This way there would be nothing for the anemone to get sucked into. If other devices are used, the intake would have to be enlarged and covered to prevent the anemone from becoming a victim. This can cause a real eye sore in the display.

This is how I covered the intake of a pump, in the refuge, of one of my systems. It's a 2" PVC pipe with holes drilled in it and fiberglass window screen wrapped around it. It is ugly, but the anemone is safe.
