Painting......

Hey Everyone!

Does anyone have any suggestions for painting the back of my tank? What type of paint should I use?

Thanks!

Steve

I personally would not paint my glass. I painted a piece of plastic and the attached it to the back of the tank.
This way if I get tiered of it I can change it without scraping the glass.
Nice Tank

Nice new 75!!

I agree with Mafiaman that a removable back is better, especially if you ever upgrade and try to sell the 75.

You can make your own or buy the plastic ones from the LFS.

Good luck with the new tank!

This looks like it might work well..going to cut out a black piece with my rotozip and use it on the little tank for the bedroom.

Thanks for the quick response. I don't plan on getting rid of the 75 anytime soon so I think I am going to paint it. I had the stick on type background on my last 55 and I was not happy with it. It kept falling off and had air bubbles in it.

(I already lost the directions to setup the overflow kit) HAHAHA This outta be fun.

Thanks again!

I used black construction paper taped all around on the back of the tank. This way its even cheaper and easier to change.

Okies don't tell my CEO but just cut out a piece of opaque plastic at work and it is the ticket. Now I just have to figure out a way to stick it to the tank.

I have had bad luck on my FW tank with those background things.

Latex

I have heard of using latex paints because they can be peeled off. I have never done it but thats what I have heard. I like your tank. I just purchased the 72 G. Bow Front Reef Tank from All Glass 3 weeks ago.

the 125g has a painted piece of luan. it is cut to the exact size of the glass part showing on the back of the tank. that way it fits shug against the tank so anything pushing on the back of the tank keeps the board in place. i have it painted black.

Nikki's tank has a neat swirl blue/green/aqua coloured background that she painted herself! i think she used tempera paint, but it can be scraped off real easy. i know i have scraped off some playing with the plumbing.

I used oil based enamel on mine. I did it in black but I never liked it so when I moved 2 years ago i scraped it off and re-painted it blue. I used car paint. Poly-eurothane enamel. stunk up the house for a day or two but it covered well and looks great. It is real easy to get off of the glass so don't worry. If you don't like the color just let it dry for a while and scrape with a razor blade.

waterbased acrylic would work too, but might not be perfectly uniform. some people like the swirly pattern brush stroke look, though.....

i used a quality acrylic enamel it is the best choice for a glass, or acrylic tank.if you want to do something interesting try painting coraline ares in rose colored paint first, then painting black over the coraline colored areas. you'll have your coraline before light, or water hits your tank. i know i am a sick cookie, but being a painter for 23 years made me this way...i think it has something to do with the fumes....

SteveJess2000 -

After you decide which paint to use ....

Don't forget .... be sure you paint the BACK of the tank, not the FRONT.
