Paint for the background

On acrylic..What do most use?

Flat, semi or gloss....

I will be using black, and thinking semi-gloss!

Sorry I cant help answer your question, thought I might take the opportunity to ask one as well since it is on the same subject.

On glass....can you use paint for the background? I would use black as well. If so, what type?

Yes you can paint glass. Not positive as to which type. I would imagine you could use about any type.

How did you get the old background off?

Not that I have ever painted an aquarium but I have painted large glass windows as part of a rather massive theater piece.

Note 1, if you would like it to be easy to remove, a good cheat is to mix soap into your paint, it will make it much easier to remove it later without the use of harsh chemicals(we did this to the school cafeteria's windows so I am speaking from experience here).

Note 2, flat will help minimize flash problems, high gloss will be very reflective and if you do a lot of photos, this may matter to you.

I painted the back of my 90g with:


It worked swell. I would suggest getting one of those mini rollers and take your time. Put a coat on, let it set and *fully* dry before putting the next coat on...repeat 3-4x. I have had no problems with chipping or it not staying firmly placed on the glass. In fact, it dried quite nicely, looks very neat and is clean.

I would say get the semi gloss though as I have found that putting my hands in the tank and occasionally dripping down the back of the tank will leave white drip marks that don't go away all that easy on the flat that I used. They will go away, just takes a few passes and I don't think that semi will have the same small difficulty. If this is going on the back of your tank, remember, the glare might not be much of an issue as you will have a film of algae or coralline growing back there.

epoxy work great so if it get wet on the outside the salt won't kill it.

I used kyrlon spray paint on my glass tank. It turns into a plastic almost when it drys. I would recommend it for the glass tank. Its like 4 bucks a bottle and will just about be enough for one 55 gal most likely. I did about 4 coats just to make sure.
