I would say white to get the max reflection off the interior of the canopy

Ditto on the white,,,,,even tho i still need to do it to mine,,,,
i was looking into adding some kind of white "plastic" material to mine,,,figger since mine is up n running, and the inside of the canopy is natural color wood, white oughta bounce some of the light around ,and hopefully get into the tank,,,

Depending on the reflector - it might be less an issue. Didn't paint mine - but my PFO parallel reflector doesn't let any light go through. IMO a good reflector will make this point more moot .... and I found the spread/intensity off a good reflector to be well worth the cost.
My 2 cents.

True, a reflector does make a difference,,,,
in my case a have a lot o' canopy,,,,,with reflectors above the 2-400 Wt'ers, with a decent amount of space between lights n 'water surface,,14-16",,,,just looks like a lotta inside space to either "suck up" light or bounce it around,,,,

I did both, painted it white inside and have 6 feet of good reflectors also. Maybe it's overdone but I wanted to somehow make it last as long as possible. If you paint it white I would stay away from the eurathane, I my last one and even with the "spar varnish type it tends to yellow in time.
