Pagoda cup question?
I have a pagoda cup coral. Ive had it for about 3 weeks now and it hasn't opened. The color still looks good no fading or anything just not opening.
Everything else is looking great no problems other than the cup. I first had it in low light low flow for about 2 weeks nothing then I moved it to med flow med light still nothing so today I moved it to mod light mod flow. I thought these were easy corals? Where do you have yours? Can you help?
I know Kelli has a beautiful one and has it on the btm of her tank but mine didnt seem to like it there. Any recommendations? Oh I have MH 2 175 watt 14000k lights.
thanks
Patrick

i have mine under 250 watts, up high and high"ish" flow.
did you check for leathers around it that could be bothering it?

Those things are pretty tolerant of different conditions IME. I have mine under moderate light and flow. I would quit moving it around so much. Is there anything touching it? Does it extend polyps at night?

I have the same coral as well.
Make sure that flow is not blasting right on it. They prefer flow in which the polyps would move around gently in my experience. Mine receeded like this when a stuck powerhead blew right on it.
Also in my experience these corals take alot of time to get used to things and open fully, When I first got mine, it didnt open fully for about two weeks.
I would agree with hng and leave it alone for a while and stop moving it around. They get upset and slime up bad when you handle them IME.
Keep an eye on it and watch for bleaching or fading and make sure nothing is bothering it as said. what are the neighboring corals?

thanks hng, zxcv and Andy
No nothing is touching it no the flow isn't blasting on it I had it in low at first now I would say mod flow but nothing strong. Maybe I'm just moving it too much. The color is still good no fading. It doesn't open at night.
No fish are bothering it either so it must be me.
Thanks
Patrick

i didnt say something had to be touching it, in some cases, corals can just be within a few inches and affect each other through chemical released.
but either way, leaving it and letting it get used to the tank is a good thing too.

I have mine about a foot below my 250 MH 14K. It is doing just fine. I blow it out once a week with a turkey baster and other than that I don't do anything.

thanks Andy and Mike
Andy when I first placed it, It was in low light and low flow with nothing around it for at lest 5-6 inches. It was in that spot for about 2 weeks and never opened. Last week I moved it to a little brighter light and a little more flow and at that point it was just a cpl of inches from a leather. This morning I moved it a little up closer to the lights and its now getting mod flow and there is a small hammer about 3-4 inches behind it. The hammer can not touch it because it is behind it with a rock in between them.
Mike
Mine is about 2.5 - 3 ft below my lights 2 175 watt 1400 k mh. So far nothing has collected on it so I haven't had to clean it. Mine isnt shaped like a cup its flat and vertical.

Would you happen to have any angel fish in your tank. I have a pagoda cup that has been doing great. I decided to try a coral beauty angel in my tank, it started to pick on the pagoda, nipping the underside of the coral. The coral closed up until I removed the offending fish and has been great ever since.

Yes I do I have a coral beauty as well. Ive been watching all day and havent seen any of my fish even go near the coral. I will watch again tomorrow to see. If it is the fish I will have to get rid of the coral. There is no way I could catch that fish in a 150 gallon tank.

I have a pagoda cup in my 20, and it was rather finicky when I first put it in there. After a week or two it came around.
