Ozonizer?
Hey all,
I'm just about to purchase another tank and saw one on the recycler with an ozonizer among various other things (skimmer, trickle sump, etc.).
I have no experience with ozonizers... Do you guys think they are a good investment?
Thanks in advance!

The hobby has gotten very far away from ozonizers. I honestly don't know to much about them, only that they can be hard to set up correctly and or need some type of controler. I and most people on this board don't have one and my tank appears to be fine. HTH

Yeah, I agree. My tank is just fine without one now but I was wondering since it came with a tank if it was worth trying to make use of it. Everything is brand new so I know it functions... Hmm.

Hopefully someone who has used one or is using one will stop in.

Well here is some info about Ozone....
It is a chemically active form of oxygen. Ozone occurs naturally in the upper atmosphere and is also produced by lightning bolts during thunderstorms. It is produced for use in water purification by exposing oxygen to high voltage electrical discharges. Not only does it kill all bacteria, but also destroys viruses, and water born parasites, and also removes smells from water , and leaves no residue.
Ozone will eliminate all sources of microbiological contamination.
Ozone is a sterilant for microorganisms.
Ozone oxidizes cerium, lead, silver, cadmium, mercury, and
nickel.
Ozone has been used since 1903 for the treatment of drinking water, and remains the most effective means in the elimination of microbes.
My opinion is if you are to use ozone use it for your water that will go in your tank...{ water changes, makeup for evaporation}, and not like a filter for your tank.......

Hi, a friend of mine used ozone in conjunction with his skimmer. He used a redox controller and kept the redox at about 325-375. Ozone oxidizes organics to nitrates, ozone also helps the skimmer work more efficiently by making the organics clump together. His nitrates where allways around 5-10. He's the only person that I have seen that kept a flowerpot coral successfully. The thing took up the whole middle of the tank 80g, talk about stretching out. He did not have any substrate and all his corals looked good. He fed the fish twice a day. I think if I had one, I might be tempted to try it out. A redox meter in itself could be useful in letting you know the water quality.
Here's a little primer on redox...

Search the internet for more info "reef tank redox controller"
Hope this helps!

So I bought the tank. It is in beautiful shape and came with a brand new Berlin stand alone skimmer and the ozonizer. I thought the ozonizer treated the water but I guess it treats the air that is pumped into the skimmer. I will have to set it up and see how it all works. If anyone has any advice or sites to look up that would be great. Thanks.
By the way this is the deal I got. 50 gallon never used Sear Clear Acrylic tank with stand, Berlin 12 blade skimmer, ozonizer, brand new 20 gallon sump with bioballs, two brand new Rio 2100 powerheads, an extra large brand new whisper air pump for the ozonizer... All this for $300. www.recycler.com
Can't beat it!
