I've got one of those hang-on overflows with the channel syphon. Over time hair algae and other goo builds up in the channel and starts to seriously restrict the flow. It's funny because no of the stuff is in the tank or sump. Anyway, about once every 2 or 3 months I have to breakdown the overflow and clean it out. I was wondering if any of you out there have any tricks for keeping this thing clean(er)? It's really a pain to clean.
I know, I know just trying do dodge another one of those maintenance tasks.
Is the tube clear? I have a clear tube on my hang on skimmer, and I have the same problem, it is close to the lights and algae thrive in the water flow.
shade it from the light, or use a black permanent marker to.
Same thing happens to my overflow. I have hair algae growing in there but nowhere else in my tank. I recently put a piece of acrylic over it that I painted black to keep any light from entering. So far, so good!
We have a scrub brush dedicated to the tank and we use this to clear gunk from the teeth of the hang-on overflow and from the overflows in the 135g. Once or twice a week should be enough to keep it clear.
Aahhh, light! The thing is right under my VHO's. You people are so smart.
Thank you!
