overflow for 55 gallon

what size (gph) overflow should i have for my 55 gallon tank. also how big are the overflows i am concerned it wont fit behind my tank with the wall being there i cant move my filled tank. do they take up about as much room as a powerfilter i did have a aqueon 55 powerfilter back there which was big.

Get a lifereef overflow box, just a standard one (I think they are about 600gph). Just move the tank forward a couple of inches if it wont fit.

i cant move the tank it probibly weighs well over 1,000 lbs. i have 5 inches of clearance behind the tank from the tank to the wall. i fit with aqueon 55 powerfilter with room to spare so im thinking a 300 gph overflow will fit no problem.

Will probably fit fine. 600 GPH by the way.

thx. so that is just what the overflow is capable of flowing? as long as i dont have a return pump that will exceed 600 gph then the amount of water going over the overflow will equal the amount returned by the pump?

i looked at the lifereef overflow, and the design is absolutely solid...i found an eshopps overflow that was the same concept and went with that one because it was less costly. it doesn't take up more space than a HOB filter.

for the flow rate of 600 gph, I found mine to flow slightly less than that out of the tank because I have a hard time removing all the air from the siphon tube...if I did a better job it would probably flow the 600 gph. i run a mag 9.5 for a return and I have a ball valve on the return line to dial back the return flow to a rate that my overflow can keep up with.

FYI, make sure you use a "tube style" overflow box, they don't loose their siphon in power outage situations (mine's been tested 4-5 times already)...the "weir style" overflow can loose the siphon in the power outage and requires the air lifter pump to "avoid" losing the siphon, but i've heard anecdotally that they can still loose siphon, but I don't have direct experience with this type of overflow.

here's a link for the eshopps overflow....HTH

Im using the eshopps on my 55 gallon and it does a great job. Does not lose its siphon in power outages either.
