outdoor reeftank?
i currently live in michigan, but am planning on moving to south carolina within the next year. alot of my family has relocated there so im planning on it too. michigan is kinda crappy imo anyways lol. was looking online and saw a house with a small greenhouse outside with a glass roof. then i started thinking about a huge reeftank in there, with the sun as the lighting. anyone ever try this? cant think of much better/efficient lighting than the sun. what do u think? in sc could a reef be grown under natural lighting in a greenhouse? thinking like 500-1000 gallons since humidity wouldnt be an issue either. maybe a couple pendants just as supplements?

yes, Steven Pro and Anthony Calfo have both done this. Steven's is still in the construction phase, but it is going to be sweet. i will be getting a lot of corals from him when it is up and running.

only concern i can think of is heat in the summer and cold in the winter, nothing a couple heaters and chillers cant fix, or you can do hvac for the whole building, just something to think about.

i know that Steven is going with the HVAC for the building. i am not sure about what Calfo has/had. it would be interesting to try to use the sun as your main light source though.

There is one tank in Hawaii, part of a zoo I believe
it was a featured tank in some magazine 2 years ago

At Wakiki aquarium I do believe and its still up and running.
Also there was a guy named o2manyfish on RC that had a 1000 gal outdoor sps system that ran off of sunlight.
he had a major crash when rain water drop his salinity.

i may experiment with sunlight on my tank in a few years. using solar tubes from the roof to above the tank.
Ranran- is there a link about that tank. it would take an insane amount of rain to cause a salinity drop that would kill a tank of 1000g. would like to know more.
