OTC Nutritional supplements in the Marine Aquarium

I was killing some time in the drugstore waiting for a prescription, and walked passed the nutritional supplements section.

Is it feasible to dose trace elements like say Magnesium for example from a nutritional supplement available over the counter? Can OTC pill supplements be used in marine reefs?

Something like this @ drugstore . com is close to something I was looking at: linky Since it's FDA approved, it may be much better than any other DIY non food-grade type replacements for commercial Reef supplements.

I realize there are a couple things that would need to be taken into consideration to determine if it is feasible.

1- Chemical compatibility: any harmful chemicals that are included in the supplements would obviously not be desirable & make it infeasible. Also if the Magnesium Oxide (which the supplimnets contain) is usable by the reef critters.

2- Dosing: at 500mg per tablet, it's significantly more than something Kent Marine liquids provide (if my memory serves me correctly). Careful conversion & manipulation of the pill would be required to dose at the needed concentrations. Pulverizing dry pills is the only way that would probably work since the Gel pills would probably be very difficult to work with accurately.

3- Others??????

Suggestions on this topic are greatly appreciated. Anyone with chemical & drug knowledge feel free to comment on this.

Well, this isn't maybe exactly what you were shooting at, but Eric Borneman's homemade coral food has vitamin C tablets in it, and phytoplankton and antioxidant compounds, powdered pigment complexes. see p. 64-65 of "Aquarium Corals"
