Organic heavy water at the top of my sump

My sump is broken up into compartments with the line from the overflow on one end and the return pump at the other. I have noticed that the return pump really just pulls the water from the bottom and a lot of organics slowly build up at the surface of the water in the return section. Every week or so I have to skim it off the top with a plastic cup. Is this normal or is their a trick to keep that cycling around the water column until it can make its way into the skimmer?

It sounds like your skimmer (or skimmer pump) is not doing the job.

I can't say if this is the only problem, do you have pics of the sump??

FYI im from jersey city.

The skimmer is skimming...the problem is that the organics tend to float to the top of the water and the skimmer pump sucks from the bottom.

So you are in Jersey. Do you ever go to the NJreefers.com forum? I think they have monthly meetings at members houses as well.

That is why my sump overflows the campartments through the bottom. Much better than through the top.

I guess I need to reset my baffles to try to keep that top water in the water column so that it can eventually find it's way to the skimmer.
