Opportunity.....
This isn't something that many home aquarists are going to be to interested in, but someone running a shop or maintaining tanks in a commercial environment might be very interested.
In the Portland Oregon area there is a place called the remodling center that deals in "recycled building materials". Currently this place has a truckload of hundreds and hundredsof big 400 watt mercury and sodium vapor lamps for 10 bucks each. They are the big suckers you see hanging inside the SUPER-supermarkets. Big glass shade, the whole bit..... only catch is they need 270 volt 3 phase power.
Now as I said, us home users can only dream and drool, but if you are an electrician that knows some trick or if you own or maintain any tank(s) on commercial property where you have access to, or have already got 3 phase, then here you go. They even have the bulb. The guy I spoke to sounded like they would be around for a while.
If you aren't in the portland area and are interested, let me know. For gas money (or something like that) I may be persuaded to pick up and ship some of these if you are interested. Let me know.
