Open Brain

I just got a metallic green one, he looks deflated now, guess he will open up with time. I read before I got him that is normal for them to look deflated because they are taking in your new tank water... any advice on these would be great. Also any posts of your open brain pictures would be great as well..

Had same problem, moved to reef only tank and boom they expanded like crazy. If you have any dwarf angels they may be nipping at them occassionaly and they won't open.

That tang is probably the problem. Check at night when the fish are sleeping with flashlight. The brain may swell a little then if not bothered by the fish. If it does then I would put in a tank without any bothersome fish. Before mine opened once moved they looked like a rock with ridges, there was color on the ridges but no bulbous flesh. Now they are about three times ththeir skelital size and very pretty my favourite specimans. I've enclosed a pic of them sleeping i.e. lights off. They will double in size when lights come on.They actually climb the glass.

Yeah mine is shriveled up right now.. I hope i have place enough room between him and the torch and clam... maybe they could be aggravating him... I can always move the clam somewhere but when I do he just moves himself back to where he was so I will just leave him there... I know the torch and brain can sting each other right?

but will it hurt my clam?

Also he looks so shriveled that maybe some of his skeleton might be showing... his mouth was opening and all when i was acclimating him, maybe he will just take some time...

IME check the specimen in the LFS very, very, very carefully. Even ask if the shop keeper can let you see the underside where the polyp joins the skeleton. Open brains can be easily damaged. They can recover but you need excelent water quality. So if one is damaged in transport to the LFS and the water in his tanks are not too good, then the brain is not likely to survive. I say this because of a expierience of mine. Take a pic of the area you think is the skeleton. However, I hope in your sake it is just adjusting to your tank.

What kind of lighting did the LFS have and what lighting do you have?

Ok he is looking better now I think, maybe he is just a small brain, but his tentacles are out now and the very small places where i could see his skeleton is gone...

But what about his proximity to the torch and clam, he tentacles are out so I guess i may try to feed him a krill or something and see what he does...

I have 130W PC on a 29G tank and he is brilliant metallic green color when the light is on

Well I feed him a piece of krill and he ate it, it was neat his mouth opened and his tentacles moved it near his mouth... a few times i thought the piece of coral would blow away in the current, but it looked like it was still attached to the brain by some type of mucus, because the tentacles aren't really long...

I think i just have a small brain coral..

Sounds like it's pretty healthy, no need to worry.
