Question

open brain

i was told that it needs to be set on sand but i am seeing more and more pics of it on the rocks.

in my nano i have limited space on the sand ans would like to get a clam
so what i am asking is can i set it on the rocks or will that hurt it ?

Thx

I would think as long as its base is placed so it can expand/open without touching anything it would be fine. IMO

I have had my open brain in both situations. It clearly opens up more and shows better color in the sand. It was also fine on the rock work but did not open as much. I think you would be O.K. as long as there are no sharp rocks to puncture or irritate its tissue. ----HTH

I've had open brains for several years and they definitely like it better on the sand. They open up better and they will definitely climb off the rocks and tumble to the sand (sometimes face down if they are unlucky)

I've had my large open brain on the rocks for 4 years now. The only time he "jumped" was after I did a major cleaning and reset my LR. I put him back in upside down. He did a face plant on the CC. Brushed him off, turned him right-side up, and placed him back in the hollowed out LR. He never jumped again.
As said, give them plenty of room to expand if you stick em' in the rocks. By the end of the photo period, my brain will actually be wrapped around his large rock.
I can't stick him in the sand for I am BB w/CC for looks about a half to three-quarters of a pound in my 30gal.

Forgot to mention, if you have a high wattage per gallon PC or MH lights, keep him down low. Open brains don't like very bright light. If you see him lose his color and not looking so happy after about a month on the LR, then you may have to give him shade.

HTH,
Smo
