one week into cycle, is this diatom?
it's a very orange algae beginning to grow on the sand. The macros seem to be holding their own, I figured I'd just leave them in there as I have a large one in the 20g as backup if these can't handle the cycle.

That's what it looks like to me. Your macros won't have much work until the nitates hit. They should be removing the phosphates though.

Yup, diatoms are not algae, and they will pass as the available aciid they utilize is used up

Macros helps remove phosphates!? This is the first I've read on this. Does this mean my phosphate remover is not really necessary. Just an expense I could have used to buy coral.

Yes, they remove nitrates and phosphates. Once they get going, you should see a dramatic reduction in GHA since the macros out compete for it.

Macro algae will utilize nitrates and phosphates in idea situations, but algaes have some draw backs, you have to physically remove algae growth to export N/P and algaes are notorious for leaking organics and defensive chemicals as well.
Phosphate sponges often utilize aluminum oxide compounds that a lot of soft corals may react badly to, so use them carefully
Well cycled rock, light fish loads, limited feeding and vigorous skimming helps keep the unwanted nutrients in check.
Remember boys and girls you are tring to replicate a beautiful but vastly complex sliver of one of the most intense ecosystems on the planet, Very few short cuts work, esp if you dont take the whole picture into account before trying a quick fix
