Question

One single Banggai baby

I don't know what is going on with my banggai pair, but I thought you guys may want to check this out. My male banggai has been carrying now for 25 days, which is remarkable because in over 15 spawnings he has NEVER carried them longer than 2 weeks. He has ALWAYS aborted them. So I am beginning to be a little interested as to what is going to happen. But I have not seen any babies' tails or anything in his mouth. But now, to add to all of this, I found this about an hour ago flopping around on the sand:

It is definitely a baby banggai, but why? I just don't understand it at all. The male releases one single baby? Or maybe the eggs have hatched in his mouth, and this one just got out? I don't have a clue. But I have put this on in the refugium and am hoping for the best. Anybody have a theory as to what is going on?

Drew

Awwww poor little gaffer.....he looks like a preemie.

Best of luck with him, but I wouldn't hold my breath, he doesn't look developed enough to make it.

I have no direct experience with banggais, but with my seahorses I've been through underdeveloped preemies, small broods, miscarriages, and broods a-plenty....their tank is stable, the params are all good, it's just Mother Nature's way sometimes.

Best of luck with him, and with the next bunch.

Hey Drew-

25 days should be sufficient...but that little guy doesn't look quite right. We only found 2 babies out of our last brood, so I guess some can be much smaller than others. Chances are he still has a few babies in his mouth. Check your overflows and near the sandbed in the tank. The head of your little one looks almost normal, but the fins are very underdeveloped. I don't think his chances of making it are good. At least the male carried the babies this time. It may be something totally out of your hands though.

Drewman: My bangaii cardinal carried for 28 days. I could see babies in his mouth (using a magnifying glass) He only had 5 babies in his first brood. I found two in the overflow and the other 3 swimming in the tank. I got them out with a turkey baster. Keep an eye out for them as he will release them over a period of time. Good luck..let us know how it goes. PS. My male was carrying eggs again 5 days after he released those.
