Okiedokie..... assorted tank related questions

A handful of questions, please help with what you can or point me in the right direction to find out....

ok, since i'm planning to use a 30 long glass tank for a sump and ditch the bowing Rubbermaid, i want to make it a "RUMP" (Refuge/Sump), so i need to put in the partitions.... According to AllGlass's website the dimensions for a 30 Long are:

30 Gallon 36x12x16

Since the length is 36, how large should i make my compartments?

I was thinking of making one on each end, the Right end to house the return pump and the Left end to collect the water from the Overflow (my bowfront is on the Left), i could stuff it with filter media and it may need a flo-through cover to keep stuff from floating out on its way from Left to right across the Fuge....
i'd like to be able to have a shallow sandbed in the fuge (to encourage pods and make the viewable portion look nicer) and would like to grow Tang Heaven and other macros in there to pull some nutrients and grow a sustainable crop to feed my tang with.

Also, how far down should i notch the partitions for overflow to the next chamber and what precautions should i take to keep any critters, sand and algaes from flowing out of the fuge and into the return chamber?

Also, i'm going to use the now vacant 30 gallon (that already exists and sits on top of the stand) to start up a freshie tank. The current freshie tank i have is a 10 and its actually taking up more room than it needs to be, so i'd like to break down that tank and stand (its just standing there off to the side and looks kinda out of place, decoratively speaking)so i want to empty that 10 into the 30 and eliminate the 10 (i'm going to break down the 10 salt too and use the rubbermaid for a hosp tank)--- now here's the relevant question. I had some driftwood that i used to decorate that 30 when it went from brackish to salt....it spent about 2 months in full salinity salty water, any ideas on how much soaking i'll have to do to leach out any salts that are in it so it won't hurt my freshie fish? (a gourami, platys and clown pleco & some water plants). I have to soak the wood anyway to get it to sink again cause its been dry for at least another month.

Oh, goodness, what else can i think of?

no, i think thats about it for now.....

I think a lot of people are still boggling over the term "RUMP"
