I think (and I have no idea for sure) that someone didn't stir their sand bed for a really long time and then decided to stir it. Afterwards after some sickness and death the myth began to never stir your bed. In reality I would suppose that some anoxic areas developed in this someone's tank and that the stirring released some what I believe is hydrogen sulfide but I'm not sure and that was the source of the problem. I have consistenly stirred my 3" bed; all of it, with an old long handled scraping tool. If you keep up on it it doesn't even get that bad. Run floss or sock when you do it and then clean it out.
