Ok, so what is your opinion...

I have been down to a 10g and 6g nano for the last few months and i am looking to upgrade a little. here are the questions:
  1. my friend has a used acrylic 40g tank with corner overflow that i am looking at buying. how much do you think it is worth?
  2. the only skimmer i have left is my monster bullet 3... what do you think i should get for this thing?
  3. i have no recirc pump for the tank so what do you recommend? i am gonna be upgrading from a 1" to a 1.5" drain.
  4. should i do a CLS or powerheads?
  5. i am using a dual 175w MH setup

1. If it's in great shape, maybe $100. But if there are any scratches or anything, about half that.
2. A smalller skimmer (hehe, I don't know what they're worth... I assume you're looking to sell it?)
3. A smaller tank like that, maybe a mag 7 or 9? I've got a 7 that works great, but some folks complain of noise on that model. I've never experienced it. I currently run a mag 18 and it's excellent.
4. On that small of a tank, powerheads could become obtrusive. I may go for a CLS, though I'm blissfully ignorant on external pumps (they seem to run at higher wattages, and I don't like paying for electricity).
5. Excellent.

No idea on cost of the tank or price for the skimmer. Recirc pump size will depend on skimmer and sump size. You want to keep flow through the sump minimal to get effiecient skimming. I am running a Mag 12 on my skimmer and a mag 9.5 on my recirc.

BB SPS......go with CLS. Maybey even 2. You will want one for a spray bar to keep the floor clean, and one for actuall circulation.

(2) 175W MH should be great.

Oh yeah....I meant to say that is just my opinion. I honestly can't speak from true experience cause I don't have much.

3. I think modding it to a 1.5" would depend on your skimmer GPH
4. Tough call. PH's are quick and easy, CLS looks much better but a bit of work.
5. Sounds good.

if its a good friend that has the tank, why dont you work out a deal, if i had a 40 laying around, i would give a friend a really good deal on it.

for a skimmer, check out the octopus 150, small and powerful, should work wonders on that tank.

for return pump, i would go smaller, like a mag 5 or 7 at the most, you dont want a ton of flow through your sump, it does nothing, and your not trying to get all the flow from your tank out of your returns either. something nice and small just to circulate is all you need.

platy is right, modded nano's, cant beat em. but if your on a budget, a couple modded maxi 900's would really crank a 40 gallon tank. and maybe another maxi 1200 feeding a spraybar across the back. im not a fan of cls, they are just to permanent for me.

175 should be great, i think iwaki (how ever you spell it) makes a 175w bulb that rivals most 250's in par, someone else might know the exact brand better though. im not 100% sure on that.

I think it is the Iwasaki 175W 14K bulbs. I am looking at getting 2 for my tank. Don't remember exact PAR value but it did rival some 250W Bulbs.

if you use one of those bulbs ^. you can easily toss a couple t5's on it with pure actinics, to get the color you want. the par would really help get the growth going. just a suggestion though, you know what your getting into already

only read your post but...... I would do a cls. I have 1 tank with cls and the other with powerheads. This is going to save you alot of room and you won't have to fight with magnets or suctions cups. just my .02
