Oh Geez, he is changing things again,...

I was given 300 G worth of Oceanic salt. I used this in the past and had tuns of problems. To use up the last of it, I mixed it 50/50 with instant ocean salt, this worked ok, and gave me levels I liked, but I never bothered to buy more oceaniac when it was gone and just kept buying instant ocean.

I mixed up a 7 gallon batch of the 50/50 mix I used prior, and came out with these levels

Mag 1260 (good)
P04 = 0 (Good, some batches were bad and had po4)
Kh = 8.0 (Ok, I run slightly higher)
CA = 420 (good)

Here is the question, would you risk switching your SPS tank over to the 50/50 mix in search of better levels and to use the salt, or would continue to use IO alone?

Thanks,
Whiskey

Why not slowly use it at like aa 90/10 rate? Or find a buddy who can use it!

Better yet. Just start a new Nano tank with it!

gradually drop the amount of oceanic to 0% over a period of time, once you get to O% in the water changes, you'll still be gradually reducing the amount left of Oceanic and gradually be coming up to 100% eventually on the IO. If you're out of the Oceanic, YOU MIGHT JUST CONSIDER A SLOW ACCLIMITIZATION OVER A FEW DAYS OF DRIPPING INSTEAD, it can't be any worse than leaving a LFS, so you may just see a pouty coral for a week or so, but using slow acclimitization should minimize the issue if you have no more Oceanic. The diff between Oceanic and IO is not a broad as some other salts, but just in case, go slow if possible.

hmmm...300 gallons? What's that, 2 buckets? At $40 a bucket?

So for $80, would I risk my SPS's?

NOPE! hahaha

give 'em away...or better yet, if you're in a reef club, take them as door prized at the next meeting.

JUST my thoughts. hehehe

IO and Reef Crystals are AWESOME salt mixes. I'd never use anything else. hahahaha

Ah the eternal debate.
I had used Oceanic before and it just happened that I had terrible hair algie blom for that time, this could have also been because I had a sand bed and I was probably feeding too much.
Now I use IO, I am bare bottom and only feed every other dayfor the fish and on the odd days my coral. Seem to be working ok.

Ya, I had a big problem before when I was using Oceaniac alone (CA and ALK ballance went way out of wack, plus algae)

but when I used a 50/50 mix with oceaniac and instant ocean it worked great.

I have already changed the Nano over to the 50/50 mix, it doesn't care, I have used 5 diffrent salt mixes on it in the last year I am just wondering about the SPS tank, seems like the vote is in favor of leaving well enough alone right now.

Thanks for the replys, keep em' comming,
Whiskey

Nice pictures, I use Reef Cystals for reef tanks, and Oceanic for FO tank.
