odd silt spots in my sand bed
Have a question for the experts?
In my sand bed I have a few areas (size of a dime)
near the LR that look like something has dug into the sand or dug inthe LR. (example: look at an ant hill and there is finer silt on top). This is what it looks like? I don't see anything crawling around. I don't have any crabs or shrimp just a few snails and a skooter bleeny and a purple blenny(i think thats what it is) I did have a tag along with one of the LR's it was a bright red worm looking thing the lenght of a small paper clip)? Very vague, just wondering.
Thank

Hi MikeP! We have so many critters in our reef that it could just about be anything! Sounds more like a worm of some sort like a bristle worm as they will go into your deep sand bed and bore holes in your LR. HTH Johnny

Mike,
Did you see the movie "Tremmors"?
You have lug worms.
Look in the front bottom of this picture, looks like a volcano. The one that made that is about 6".

ROTFL
Johnny, I'm not pulling your leg. Honest
Have you ever noticed it spitting sand like a volcano?
More than likely you have Arenicola cristata.

OK Jerel!! I have noticed sitting in my recliner and out of the corner of my eye I believe I saw sand spouting up into the water in the right back corner of the tank.
OK if this is the real deal are they ok to have in your sand bed? Johnny

Arenicola cristata:

This guy looks like he belongs on a fish hook!
I found this reference to another Lugworm:
( Abarenicola pacifica):

Jerel,
Thanks for this ID; I've got a few of these myself. Mine don't raise quite the large volcano as in your photo.....and excretory sand casings are often seen at the top of the pile.

Hmmm actually I have seen something like one of these things coming out of a hole in my LR. I don't know of it's the same animal, but still, cool. A while back on a different board I remember a guy who said he kept earthworms alive in his tank. I was one of the people who said that was, of course, impossible. Perhaps he had some of these critters. Interesting.
Drew
P.S.- Spanky, nice tank!
