Octopus NW 200 needlewheel skimmer?
I have heard good things about this skimmer... does anyone here have one? Do you like it, is it easy to use?

Ive got the NW200 with is the biggest non recirculating skimmer. Its great! I liked the way it worked out of the box but then I found a mod thread on RC for it and modified it some and now this think works even better. There seems to be a lot of people willing to modify these which is good. I think they are coming up with some good stuff. I could probably modify it some more but its producing enough foam that I almost have to have the gate valve completely open.

I have the ASM G3 and everything I have seen read on the octupus now I'd get those over the ASM. The G3 is great but......
The octopus are better built, and cheaper and seem to work just as good!
I have never seen one or used one, but basically have the exact same principal.

I'm not impressed with the ammount of bubbles that pump produces, I'm also not impressed with teh Venturi they use, or the reccomended feed through rate, or the ball valve for water hight.
It's a fine skimmer, a couple of mods and it would be allot better though. I think the G3 is better out of the box, and if you do the gate valve mod on it Look out!

No, I don't. I don't own one either, just played with it at a friends house so I can't get one.
The venturi I saw on the Octipus is a peice of rigid airline into the pipe, that's poor IMO, that's bound to make larger bubbles, forcing the pump to work harder to break them up. A good venturi would go straight through, as close to the pump inlet as possible, and have many small holes for the air to come out of, forcing the bubbles to be smaller even before they hit the needlewheel, and not giving time for them to re-join.
This is the way I made the venturi on my DIY job.

Oh, if I remember right you have the non-recerc model, that one may have a different venturi, I'm not sure.

yeah I have the non recirc unit. It came with 2 venturis. one was a longer molded plastic piece and another was a shorter piece that was drilled and had a short piece of rigid tubing placed in it. Ive been using the longer molded piece. Do u have any pics of the one u made? I wouldnt mind experimenting with different venturis. I dont think my skimmer produces large bubbles though. It looks almost like shaving cream, unlike my old sealife systems skimmer I had before
