ocean sand from gulf a possibility for aquarium?

I live near the gulf of mexico and was wondering if the sand would be a possibility as a substrate for my reef aquar. I have crushed coral now.

The problem concerns polluntants in the sand. My understanding is that most beach sand, if not all, has the potential for some icky stuff in it that you don't want in your tank.

How can you tell? That's the problem...I don't think you can.

Again, this is my understanding...so hopefully others will share their opinion.

Im with Casey I live about 2 min from the Gulf and i would never use the beach sand in my tank. There is no telling what has been in the sand or what is even in it.

Welcome to TRT maybe if you go off shore a mile or two and do a deep dive but not on the shore line.

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper and easier to just go to home depot?

Many people use beach sand without a problem ... I have been doing so w/o a problem on the West Coast for over 30 yrs ... use common sense and stay away from polluted areas.

OK, so beach sand is out of the question. If I used "bought" sand, would I have to go thru cycling again? What would be the procedure?
