Ocean Algae Bloom

A short, but interesting article in CNN's top stories... definitly something to watch as the story developes.

Marine toxin suspected in dolphin deaths.

Hey Casie! I can understand when disease, parasites, toxins, etc happen in our small glass box but when it occurs in the ocean it gets scarey!! Johnny

*nods* It is scary! The only thing that makes me feel better is that there are people who are constantly checking on things like this. Here on the barrier islands of Louisiana there is a service called LUMCON that collects ALL beached dolphin corpses for autopsy. They encourage the fishing ships to report the location of any dolphin bodies as well so they can go investigate.

*wispers* On the week I spent there on an educational trip, we didn't collect any animals but we did find a big bale of pot wrapped in several black plastic trash bags. =P ...Called the Coast Gaurd and watched from a distance. Those guys are serious as a heart attack when they are working! =D

yeah...sometimes this kind of stuff hits hard and unexpectedly. when i lived in south texas, dinoflagellate blooms called "red tide" killed lots of marine life. i guess it's part of nature's continuous cycle...and i'm sure mankind doesn't help things...

When I lived on Nantucket Island, Mass. Every now and then the ocean side of the island would become saturated with red seaweed. Everywhere, in the water and on the beach. We called this "red tide" is this the same as the dinoflagellate blooms elsewhere? Just curious. Didn't mind the seaweed as much as the August jellyfish, ouch
