Don is suggesting something similar... But, a chemical burn on the coraline. If your dosing something in the tank and its not fully disolved before you put it in the tank (or sump) and it settles on the coraline it will do that.

I'm not saying that's what it is... I just wanted to point out an acurate suggestion.
