Normal???

Is it normal for me not to clean my tank at all???? i dont do water changes and i dont have a protein skimmer working(it works, but doesnt take all the gunk out). everything is growing at an incredible rate. i have a xenia and two christmas tree worm rocks in the tank. no fish, just hermits and snails. i put in calcium once a week and the macro algea is blossoming too. should i prepare for a crash?? the tank has been up for 2 years.

IMO... lucky.

Do you test your parameters?

Just keep skimming, just keep skimming, just keep skimming, skimming skimming! What do we do? We skim, skim, skim!

It sounds like the building my office is in- they have 2 freshwater tanks and NEVER clean them. When water evaporates, they just add more water. I siphoned them out about 6 weeks ago to help them out and pulled out some nice black water. They belong to the manager of another business- thats why I don't clean them. These tanks have been going years too- probably 5-10 years I'd guess. The fish are hardy- no problems. They do run filters and change them.

Yep, some people never have to worry about cleaning their tanks. If you have things very well balanced, your tank should for the most part take care of itself. But, since there are soo many factors involved, most of us have to do maintenance.
