non-stick finger

So I have this leather finger coral frag, I have had the little snot for a little over a week now and he is wreaking more havoc in my tank. Being this is my first 'official' coral, I looked up all your helpful posts about attaching frags to rocks.

I tried a piece of yarn, tying him losely. He split into two where the yarn held. I swear I didn't tie it tight!!

So I took the two and put a rubber band around them, the little one wiggled out and the big one split again.

SO..................
I left the little one to amuse himself in the crack of a rock and used gel superglue to glue the bugger to a small rock. This morning when I went to slop the tank hogs, there he was on the floor of the tank looking at me. He separated himself from the superglue.

Any suggestions for mister super coral? Kryptonite? What? I am really not cool with them sitting on the bottom, I want them up on the rocks in a good place.

Hi Adrienne,
When all else fails, put some rock rubble in a short glass or cup, put the frag in and, in a week or two, it will attach to one of the rocks and you have him!!!

...or you can try getting some tulle..or bridal veil material and putting a rock under it and the tulle over the coral. Knowing that leather, he would probably attach to the tulle instead. Finding a crack or crevice should work. I did this with tiny nepthea frag. I haven't tried yanking on it to see if it attached, but I'm assuming it did.

Have fun-
Brooke

I'm having the same problem with a couple softy frags. I ended up sewing them to the rock. They have not attached yet, but they are still where I put them. Just once through the base of the coral, then loosely aroung the rock and tied off.

I dont know about the sewing thing, but the cup or tulle sound pretty good. I think the cup cuz it might be a little less of an eyesore and not give that rotten blenny something to play with.

I tried the crevice thing but it appears I have too much current in the tank for anything to peacefully settle, at least in the spots where the lights are good. Other than the fact he is on the bottom of the tank, he looks really good, matter of fact, he is gaining a light lavendar tinge now instead of the pale cream he was when I bought him. So, thats at least good. Little suckers are a little more resilient than I thought they would.

Well I am doing this from work so I should go now. Catch everyone tonite in IRC!!

Try the toothpick training wheels method:

Glue two plastic toothpicks onto a rock ~1" apart and pointing up like goalposts. Then spear the frag in a horizontal fashion through the base. Set the base of the frag on the rock between the two goalposts such that the base of the frag is pressed onto the rock and the toothpick spearing it is touching the two goalposts. Next glue the horizontal toothpick to the other two. The toothpicks should form an H. After 1-2 weeks the frag should hopefully attach. Then you can pull the toothpicks.

Adrienne, most soft corals will attach over time if they contact a rock surface. The advantage to the bowl method with rubble is that in the reduced current they will attach since they aren't being blown all over
Once they attach to rubble bits you can use a drop of super glue or reef safe epoxy to attach them to something more to your liking.
