Non-Photosynthetic corals?
I just read in the Beginner's guide to reefkeeping that there are some non- photosynthetic corals. Which corals are those?

Check out this link to Crypitc Zone
A cryptic zone containing sponges and sea squirts
describes habitats or physical areas that receive almost no light, and very little water current.

there are several, the problem is they need to be fed. this is usually pretty troublesome. they need to be individually fed either chunk food or some kind of really fine blender mush. most of these corals are also the ones found under rock ledges. most do not like to be out in the light.
why do you ask?

I don't have adequate lighting yet
Are the orange polyp corals one of these types?

prolly, that is a pretty vague description. most of the time they are called sun corals. make sure to do some research on these. they are difficult to get to come out during the day.

Yea, that's what I'm talking about. I had some a long time ago in my first tank. They were cool and did in fact grab chunks of food out of the water. I had them in a cave. Thanks for the replies.

Here's one. But this guy is in way too much light. That's why he's all closed up. mine did very well in his cave. Polyps were out a lot.

Not to mention getting them to talk! Check out this site http://www.sjwilson.net/reef/index.html then click on the little sun coral at the bottom where it says "I have something to say"

You can train them to come out during the day. I would feed mine during the day at the same time.. and within 2 weeks, when I got home to feed..they were already open...not talking..but open. They are a beautiful coral, but do require attention. heh heh
