Noisy overflows. Ideas Please.

I have the built in overflows on a 210 all glass aquarium that are hard plumbed into my wet room in the basement. I am using the standard AGA overflow kits. They are very noisy. Is there a way for me to quiet them down.

Thanks
Mike

Are you using durso standpipes now? If not, I'd consider that first.

It's probally creating a vaccum draning that far. Look into overflow silencers.

I do believe that they are durso style. This is the kit. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=12078

Yes they are draining pretty far. There has to be something to do the trick. Man I am glad I have my wet room. Even with the pumps downstairs and the Hammerhead not even on its a noisy environment.

You probably just need to adjust the hole size on the AGA kit that you already have.

If you truly want it as quiet as can be you might want to look into the "herbie" style.

There is a thread on RC in the DIY forum by a guy named herbie, and the concept can be used in many different situations.

The short of it is that you have one main drain that you use a valve to match your return flow with precisely......so there is no water falling in the first place. This is of course dangerous and will eventually get out of time or the slightest piece of debris will casue your tank to overflow. So you have a secondary back up drain set higher than the main drain that is never used except to catch the excess water when it happens.

I've read about that 'herbie' style. Like you pointed out Fly, it's dangerous and hard to dial in. I was speaking to a buddy locally about that and he tried it a while back but it never worked out for him

Nice concept though.

Its not dangerous at all. You just have to understand that your secondary back up drain is a must have and will be needed sooner or later.

I use the concept on my external coast to coast. You will find that a gate valve will work much better than a ball valve for being able to match your flow rates as well. I initially tried to do it with a ball valve as most people do and after about 15 minutes, I cut it out and put in a gate valve and it worked pretty well.

I spent ten minutes and made a pair of stockmans that are dead silent. I would have gone the herbie way if I had planned on a backup.

Hmmm I will have to look into both methods. Right now I have some other issues that need to be dealt with and are going to take time. Kinda set me back a bit. Thanks for all the info and keep ideas coming.

Thanks
Mike

Try the hofer gurgle buster style. It is by far the best 3 bucks i've spent and im quite ticked that it took so long for me to find this. but my tank is now silent.
