Exactly what is causing the increased noise?

I love my mag 18 and it is very quiet.
My friend has a mag 24 that is very loud.

allot of time the flushing sound is caused by
your pipe going to the sump having a hump or high
spot trapping an air bubble.
The water should be mving down hill at all times.

The micro bubbles are most likely caused by the added volume
going through your sump.

Are you using the standard overflow, assuming it the typical reef ready tank setup with manufacturers drains. If so you might want to do a Durso modification on it

If a Durso won't fit, do a google search for "Stockman Overflow" That one will fit in tighter spaces but works on the same principle.

Toilet=bad. Durso/Stockman=good

I'm not a fan of hang-on overflow boxes - most are a flood looking for a time and a place.

is yours the built in over flow?, if so, i had the same noise in mine, i got a styro foam sheet, and cut it out in square pieces serveral to fit the overflow box but leave about 1- 1/2 inch on the edge, so the water can pass thru to the next stage, snuggly fit, so what you are going to do is reduce the speed and current of the water traveling down to the bulkhead, by stacking the styro piece like stairs so to speak, so the water will hit each styro piece softly, it should reduce the noise somewhat alot. practically free, couple minutes of work, the grugling is too much water trying to get thru the small bulkhead at the same time, so my reducing the speed and amount of water by the time it gets to the bulkhead should reduce or eliminate the grugling, and bubbles, hope it helps...

With a durso/stockman mod you will raise the water level in the overflow section reducing the waterfall noise , while the vent feature in the mod will eliminate the toilet noise from the standpipe
