Hey there Drew-

If your tank is still cycling, just patience my friend. Give it another 2 days and I bet they are gone! Goodluck!

and a refugium for caulerpa and a DSB. You can also just grow caulerpa in your sump with minimal lighting. Just make sure it's contained somehow. I've used bridal netting to contain caulerpa in little "saks" made of the netting. Eventually the caulerpa just grows through/onto the netting and you can harvest from the edges of the "ball". Also a great way to contain caulerpa "frags" until they "grow out".

Hi,

There's no real simple way to get rid of nitrite, except for bacterial processing it into nitrate or water changes. This is done by bacteria on your LR and DSB. Ammonium & nitrate can be processed directly by macro and other algea types.
From all my reading nitrite needs to be processed to nitrate by bacteria.

There's some real debate going on about the types of bacteria that are actually doing the work. Some new theories say that one type of bacteria can become nitrogen fixing in the prescence of oxygen and then switch to denitrifing in the absents of oxygen. Search the net for "Nitrogen Cycle" for more info. (forgive my spelling)

My advise is to get at least 4 inches of sand( if you don't already have that much), secondly some new LR will help the problem if the sand doesn't. Give the sand some time before you spend more money on the rock. Giving your aquarium time to adjust is almost always the key.
