Nitrifying Bacteria

I have an emergency - I am setting up a marine quarantine system, that I at this very second have fish bagged/boxed waiting to go into. The quarantine system that I bought came from a local freshwater breeder who is moving and came with established sponge filters. I need to know if the bacteria that is in those sponges will live in saltwater and provide me with filtration - or if they're going to die off and wipe out my new system. I was hoping I could just rinse them out with RODI water and be ready to roll. Could I be that lucky?
Preemptive thanks!
Scott

They will have to be cleaned and the Bacteria won't stay alive anyway. Clean them and make sure You have them clean, Don't add anything your not sure of. You can use clean salt water and monitor the amonia and do water change inthe QT tank if you have to. That way You can also copper and med the fish too. If you have the need to. just work keeping up with the water quality .

you can rinse the sponge with tap water and the clorine will kill the bacteria faster and clean off the sponge. then rinse it with RO/DI and you shouldent have any problems. monitor amm and ni/na they will go way up if you havent cycled the tank. but you can add "i use prime" by seachem and that works great add it sparingly but regulaurly to keep levels down untill you get a balance. its a bad idea to do this but the fish should live

I suggest you make up a large batch of replacement salt water now .. this will allow you to do frequent water changes which will keep your ammonia levels low. Purchasing an inexpensive seachem ammonia alert badge will also provide you with a convenient method to monitor ammonia levels ... especially if your using an ammonia conversion product such as Prime or Amquel which makes most std ammonia test kits worthless.
