Nitrates
having nitrate problem in my frag tank. it BB had a tang that died but hes no longer in there, added some coral food a while back and Im almost positive thats what cause my issue to start.
Tank has been up about 2 wks or so. neglected to change sock... did so today. changed 25gs total yesterday... ( 2xs in one day) and changed another 10 tonight.
dont know how accurate the red sea test kit is but its telling me im still having a bit of a problem. theres no LR in system, nothing alive other than corals.

It doesn't sound like there is any surface for denitrification to occur at all. What all is involved in the filtration?

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

I think the LR will help as long as it is large pieces and not rubble. Is there a reason you haven't put rock in the system before?

I can get my nitrates down to 0 in a 2.5 gallon with no rock. But I wouldnt want you to kiss me. If it was me.....and I had to do it without rock. I would simply keep a small sponge running through a HOB filter, clean it out daily with nsw to preserve the bacteria and dose vodka accordingly. Maybe .01ml a day in a tank that small. Thats about one drop, but it would be enough. Obviously rock would be much easier.......but it could be done. You could add 1/4th of a lb of live rock and be a lot more stable, even 1/2 lb would be enough to support a small frag tank. (if there was sparse feeding and your main goal was to grow out frags)

Yeah, you need something in there to perform the nitrogen process and the de-nitrification process. A sock isn't going to achieve what you want, especially when you need to change it out every few days. A fair about of rock, sand etc is going to be the first step. If you don't want it in the display area, move it to another portion of the system
EDIT: Also I don't recommend the vodka dosing regimen for anyone that doesn't have a firm grasp of the chemistry behind it. You can quickly nuke just about everything in the system if you don't know what your doing and understand what it accomplishes. Plus if you don't have the area to colonize the bacteria of the carbon dosing, then you wind up with some nice clear/white goop all over your corals and floating throughout the tank
