did a search and found this link for working with acrylic. I may be getting in over my head trying to build my own acrylic sump. I'll have to think about this...

it's not that i couldn't do it - but i don't have the table saw and other tools. may have to look into either borrowing from a friend, getting the acrylic cut somewhere else (a la home depot), or just using an old glass tank and trying to put in some acrylic baffles.

problem is, the space under my standard AGA stand for my 38 gal AGA is rather narrow, so i think the only tank that would fit under it would be pretty small. if i did the sump custom myself i could make it narrow enough to fit but make it longer for more vol.

we shall see...

I would lose all the media in the first 'box'. You want all the pods, food, detritus etc. to drop to the 'fuge' - that's what feeds the critters below. Also, less maintenance if you don't have to clean the media. I had a sponge in my overflow for a while and got tired of killing amphipods and other critters everytime I cleaned it out. Just didn't make sense to me.

i just get the acrylic from HD. unfortunately you can only get up to 1/4" thick. they can cut it for you there if you it. i actually just use a circular saw with a guide to cut my acrylic.

the glue on the other had is sometimes tough to find. i have to order it from tap plastics. it is called Weld-on. it comes in many different viscosities. i like the 16 becuase i use a circular saw instead of a fine toothed table saw. the higher the number the thicker and more gap filling it is.

CAT, good point about any filter in the sump killin g/filtering out the critters. Duh should've thought of that one myself. I could just cont to use the aquaclear 200 HOB if I want to use carbon.

I'll have to check out HD regarding the acrylic. I might just have them cut the acrylic, order the glue, and DIM (do-it-myself) at home.

Snazlord, I put the fish in tubs because I siphoned most of the water of the tank. I kept it to put back in, but I wanted most of out so I could see to remove the CC and UGF. The water you leave will become filthily disgusting. No matter how well you vaccumed the CC, there is still a lot of crude left in the tank. I also wanted to leave as much time as possible to let the solids fall out of solution. You might be able to do it over a few days, but it's, IMHO, easier to do it all at once. Between the detritus and sand dust, the water will become almost solid looking.

I promise you, it is not madness. It is difficult and time consuming. But will allow/mandate that your expenditures be small amounts at a time. Like you, I did not want to go through the hassles of starting over until I got to a final move (hopefully, later this year). The process allowed me to play in an environment I could keep safe for the inhabitants and easy on the wallet. Plus, I learned more from doing (with research) than I ever would have from just reading.

The bucket condos for your fish are not bad. I used 30 or 40 gallon tubs, had the fish in them for many hours, and never had any problems. Most of your fish are pretty hardy, and should not have much difficulty. This might be a good time to get rid of the trigger. There good-looking fish, but as many have said, not very compatable with reefs.

BTW, I don't remember if anybody has mentioned it, but you prolly want to start raising your SG and temp. Most reefers, and inhabitants, like to keep it around 1.024 and 82F.

Hope this helps.
