new to saltwater

Here's my story,

I had recived an old tank which near as i could tell was used for a reptile needless to say it was in need of alot of TLC. After breaking it down to 5 peices of cut glass and a good cleaning i put it back togeather resealed it with a high grade silicone glass adheasive and added a new upper trim to replace the melted old upper trim guessing from a heat light. after multiplying Length x Height x Width and Dividing by 231 ( i think thats standard for rectangular Aquariums? ) it came out to be a 55 gal. after mowing things over for a few days and viewing a few saltwater tanks i have decided to make a saltwater.

So far i have:
55 gal tank
topfin 60 filtration
topfin 60 air pump w/ dual outs
3 way gang valve
40 lbs of black moon tahiti sand

what else am i in need of? i am pondering the Nova Extreme T-5 with Lunar lights it's a 216 watt with 4 54 watt bulbs and 4 lunar lights i also want to order the IceCap T-5 Reflector(s) is this a good choice? i am also aware the black sand will absorb some light but i like the look of it over the standard crushed coral. and i have no idea what kind of power head or protein skimmer i need

Any thoughts on the things i have and things i need to get would be well appreciated i have run freshwater but saltwater is new ground for me

First, make sure it holds water, obviously lol. 55g tanks arent very expensive new, Id say around $70. So the last thing you want is to ruin what Id imagine is going to be near $700 worth of goods, live stock, etc, because the free tank leaked. And also, clean the tank with vinegar, if you have not done so yet. To get the crap from the dirty reptiles out.

For your lights, I run the T5 Nova Extremes, 24" 4x24w on my 20g tank. And I love them. I Wouldnt worry too much about the upgrade of the reflectors just yet. Thats in due time Id imagine.

As for a skimmer, you should go with something to hang on the tank, since youre new. Im still new, and I think its too in depth right now to run a sump, skimmer, etc. CPR and AquaC Remora Pros are good Hang On Back (HOB) skimmers, from what Ive read. I run a CPR, and its great, though its a little picky with where the collection cup needs to sit.

MAke sure your sand is "new", and fine enough to get the anaerobic effect for some bacteria under the top layer. Also, you will need live rock. People say its typically about 1lb of LR per Gallon. So with your filter (Which you may not need) and your skimmer, Id say 50-60lbs of Live Rock is a safe bet. Or if you want to go the cheaper way, get one nice piece of live rock, and then get some base dried rock, and let that become live, though that will take way longer.

Your tank has to cycle, yada yada yada, get some tests, yada yada yada. You need a clean up crew after this is done. Probably about 40-60 crabs, and Id say about 10-20 snails. After that, get a cheap ugly fish, like a damsel, to see if you kill him, instead of any other fish that you like and are more pricey lol.

I Think that about sums it up. You can read through the archives, and you'll find tons of info. I dont know too much still compared to a lot of people on here, but before I Came here I didnt know ANYTHING.

yea after i let the silicone cure for about a week i put 20 gallons in for about 6 hours to test the bottom i plan on adding the sand and filling it all the way and running it for a day then adding salt mix and running it for 6 days to get a week of running before i add anything my local pet store has mollies for a dollar so i'm gunna invest in 10 of them i hear they thrive in saltwater but not so well in fresh normally a month or two in fresh if i remember correctly lol

well, i would like a little of both i figure the ocean isn't all reef or all fish so a balance would be nice.

I have a slight problem i think, i'm on the bottom floor of a 4-plex and i have carpet all over now the stand i bought was $170.00
but for some odd reason the tank seems to want to lean forward and to one side i have adjusted the bottom supports and placed round spacers under the front legs to prop it more towards the back i have 1 side level within 1/16th of an in but the side that needs to be propped up more is way off almost ¼ of an inch. because my tank stand only has 4 legs and is not a base type if i try to shim it up it will make it unstable and thats not a road i wanna go down lol right now i have about 10 gal. in the tank i'm hoping it will settle

Rule #1 about Saltwater tanks, take it slowly; Rule #1 also applies to Rule #2-100 as well. Putting 10 fish in a tank at once can be an overload to the natural filtration process/progression. Keep in mind the other fish out there you may want to keep that are true saltwater; 10 mollies will take away from what you can add to your 55g tank later due to heavy bioload. Personally, I've had mollies in the past in freshwater and never had a problem; if that's all your wanting, I'd just add a little reef salt to the tank and not spend cash on a full blown reef setup. If you do want saltwater fish/corals, then I'd research online/library books of the types of fish you like and see if they fit your experience/comfort level and work towards that goal.

Hey Marcalo- Did the mollie thing a few years back. They have to be slowly acclimated to salt water. I did it as a need for live food for the sea horses I had. I got the mollies started in the fresh water and slowly over time added salt until it was the same as the tank with the horses. They bred like bunnies and kept the ponies going until a hurricane wiped out the tank.

that sucks dude the 10 mollies was an exageration tho i'd rather dump 5 extra bucks into something more usefull like high impact lighting

Update: i just completely filled my tank and added my sand looks good but i had to drain it due to my stand had a flaw should be a qwikk fix tho no water leaks amen to that lol i did however got it level on all sides within 1/16th of an inch thanks to 4 1 gallon water jug caps and 1 small 6x6 sheet of papper neatly folded and stuffed into one cap the caps should keep the heavy tank from poking holes into the carpet yet anthoer good save.

Has anyone shopped at saltwaterfish.com ? this is in no way an endorsment for that site i dunno if thats against the Terms of service to this forum but i'll cover anyway

on many saltwater tanks i have seen a clear box with holes or slots at the water level what are these used for because mine doesn't have one. but it wouldn't be hard for me to make one if they are indeed nice to have or important

Sounds like you are seeing the overflow boxes. They are needed to get water to the sump if you are using one and the teeth act as a surface skimmer pulling gunk off the water surface

Are you planning on a sump? I'm horrible with plumbing a tank but I really think you need a sump to utilize an overflow box. I think some cannister filters have a surface skimmer attachment but I'm not sure
