Question

New Tank setup

Hello all,

I am new to the Reef world and I was wondering if I can post my tank setup and if anyone could comment on it I would appreicate it greatly. I have a 20 Gl high tank, 1x55w PC and 1x15w NO Actinic, 3"DSB, 20# LR, Remora Skimmer, 2 small fish, 10 Blue Legged Crabs and 10 Astrea Snails. I was wondering if A) Is this enough filtration and B) What kind of corals could I keep in my tank. Any help would be great.

Welcome!!!

Most everything sounds pretty good. Your DSB is a little thin, but considering the size of the tank it may have to make due. How long has the tank been set up? Have you checked your water perams. lately? Do you do any supplements? If you are planning coral it is important to keep your Calcium high. The lighting issue there will be better people on here that can answer that.

Again welcome, the amount of knowledge here is amazing.

Welcome aboard!!

Boston area reefers are popping up all over The Reef Tank!

BTW, I would think you would be safe to keep a variety of mushrooms, polyps and soft corals with your lighting scheme.
Your filtration is plenty, Im sure that remmra kicks utt on your 20 gallon.

Green star polyps & xenia come to mind

Thanks Geoff and Mapster. the params are good still a little high for Nitrites. It has been running for 3 weeks with BioLive Sand. I need to add more LR.

Welcome to The Reef Tank!

Your set-up sounds good and agreed with the advice on the soft corals. Capnella and "Colt corals" would do well, too; they are soft branching corals which I like better than most of the Xenia. The Capnella is great because it frags itself, LOL, by dropping little branchlets that attach to just about anything easily and are ready for trading in a very short time. Some of the hardier leathers (not the yellows) would do well in there also.

I'd add a little more live rock, but not much. Small tanks get crowded fast and it's easy to do an extra gallon or two water change on them to keep water parameters in top notch condition.

Have fun!

Alice
