New Tank, How much sand??

I just got a 70 gallon RR. How much sand is recommended. It came w/ 250 -300 lbs, but that seems like a bit much... Also it has a 400w MH w/ 2-75w actinic VHO's and plenty of water flow. Are there any corals or clams i can't have w/ this setup?

Those metal Halides are useless too...better send them to me, just to be safe (grin)

There are a few schools of thought on the sand bed...I have 60lbs of Araganite in my 55G. That would consititute a shallow sand bed...some people like the deep sand bed, 4" which in my case would have been roughly 100 lbs or so. And, many other like the bare bottom.

I think it is a matter of taste, but would think that the amount you have is PLENTY for you, me AND yousuredo's tanks .

If you do a bottom sump refugium, you could possible use some there...

Was this system setup and active with that much sand? IF YES...BE CAREFUL...you could mix a TON of dead bacteria up when pulling it out.

My .02

The guy i got the setup from said he tore it down about a week ago. The sand was in a huge tub, i dunno if it's dead. How do you tell? The tub had about an inch of water settin on top of the sand, and you could see where there has been movement ( little critters) on the surface. It smelled horrible when i emptied it into my tank ( like rotten eggs...) but just about any tank stinks when you tank the water out. So should i ditch the sand?

So, don't quote me as the expert...but that rotten eggs smell is not good....little critters is REAL good...is this tank going to CURE out? If yes, ask the experts here, ....but I think you might be ok going with about 2" of sand covering the bottom and then expect a hard cycle while the tank cures....you'll need to get ready for a few water changes.

this is just MHO.

Ok, exactly how do i let it cure? Just fill it and let it run? I wanted to use the water from my 55 and just swap everything over in a day. Is that good or should i start fresh?

leave your tank alone, and let the new one run for a few weeks with sand and liverock until everything cycle's and all of the test come out zero ppm then it will be safe to add life to it.....if it came with snai crabs fish corals exc... pit them somewhere else until it cycles.....

as far as how much or deep that is a very debatable subject......however you decide to go, vacume it out once a week or so to keep it clean

so it's ok to put my live rock from my 55 in it right now? it won't kill any of my critters on it? Also some of my rock has mushrooms, zoo's and polyps on it, are these gonna be ok in there? And should i dose it during this period?

what ever came with the tank, sand, rock, (no critter or fish)........if none did then dont, if you are buying some put it in it, nothing from the 55 till the new one cycles........

you will need more rock correct, that is the rock you put in it......if you start to move things around in the 55 you are going to send things way out of wack and cause an amonia spike in it, and possobly kill everything in it.....
