New tank coming!! Stocking

Alright, so I found a lady who has a 150 gallon tank shes looking to get rid of. The good thing is its only $80, so once I find a way to move this tank, its as good as mine. Unless I can fit it in the BMW , but I dont think thats gonna work lol.

Well, heres some questions. This is a fish only, no reef. Im wondering if I can put some variations of larger crabs in this tank? I have a huge hermit in my 29g right now, and he only has a couple chunks taken out of his shell. Those chunks were taken out within the first day or two when I got him, so hes been ok with my puffer recently. Do you think larger snails would work, or maybe even some of those snails that stay in the sand?

I dont really get how fish only tanks work when you dont have a clean up crew. That may sound stupid, but it just doesnt add up. It seems like things will get out of hand.

Heres what I want in my tank, lets see if this adds up:

1 Porcupine Puffer (already have him)
1 Hummu Hummu Picasso
1 Foxface
1 Tomato (already have him)
1 LM Blenny (A larger one), to have SOME sort of clean up crew
Random larger hermits
A Couple inches of Crushed Coral preferably. Though it may start out bare bottomed, and I'll see how I like that.
A bit of live rock, mainly a pile in the center, with some caves for my smaller like the tomato.

As for the lights, I can just use some Nova Extremes, which arent veyr pricey at all, especially since it will be fish only. The skimmer, Im not really too sure, thats where Im a little stumped. The only skimmer Ive had is my backpack on my 29g. That obviously wont work.

Let me know if thats overstocking the tank, or if Id have room for more if I wanted?

I don't think you have much of a chance of a cleanup crew with that lineup...even larger hermits will become dinner eventually. That's just the way it is.

Why crushed coral? It is harder to keep clean ime, although not impossible.

I assume it's not a reef ready tank, so you will have to either get a high- charged HOB skimmer (or two), or an overflow and sump (and hide a skimmer in your sump).

$80 for a 150 is a pretty darn good deal. Congrats!!

Im thinking using the one I have now on my 29g, and adding another one on the other side of the tank, as large as I can get it. Im not doing a sump. Not on this tank, thats for sure.

I thought crushed coral looks better. Im not too firm on that though. I will probably just get whatever I can get a better deal on. Now Im wishing I woulda taken that 30 lbs box of sand the lady who had my 29g tank offered me! lol.

What about those tall canister looking skimmers. They are circular. I thought those just sat underneath your tank, or on the side. I didnt know you needed a sump for skimmers that arent HOB.

A skimmer that is'nt a H.O.B. has to have a sump because the pump has to sit in it for the water to go through it from the tank and the return skimmed water has to go in it to go back into the tank.

I have a 150 and you better get a big skimmer lol.
I have a red sea Berlin but wouldnt recommend that 1.
They make much better skimmers nowdays (than 11 yrs ago when I got the 150).

Santa cruz is about a good 3 hours from me. So thats quite the drive for you. I really appreciate the offer, but that just seems very inconvenient for you, being so far away. Never been to santa cruz, but Ive been to capitola, very very nice up there.

So I have to have a sump for a big enough skimmer ehhhh. So could I turn my current 29g tank into a sump? This seems like its going to be very price to put together lol. Maybe I should hold off on it until I move to an apartment I want to stay at for a while.

What about filters... Are there any filters that work efficiently for a 150g tank? This tank is said to be 8' long lol.

Im obviously thinking a better brand, but what about a set up like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Canister-Filter-...QQcmdZViewItem

It sucks it down and pumps it back up to the tank. Working like a sump, without having to have a sump!
