New Reefer Seeks Powerhead Recommendations

Hello More Experienced Reefer People:

I'm looking for recommendations from more experienced reefers on the subject of POWERHEADS.

WHAT I HAVE:

I have a main 40g tank with a built in wet/dry running on a Rio 600.

The circulation in my tank is very poor. I'm looking to move the water around more.

I also have a separate 40 g tank that I will be using to curing about 50 lbs on Fiji live rock that will arrive this week. That tank is borrowed, and is an Eclipse running a bio wheel.

WHAT I NEED:

I am looking to purchase two powerheads. First I want to use them in the live rock curing tank. After the LR is cured I want to move them into the main 40g tank to improve circulation.

Which model powerheads should I be considering? I don't want to spend a ton of money, but I don't want to buy junk either.

Some people here have suggested two MaxiJet 1200's. I'm leaning in that direction.

Any thoughts?

Any other recommendations?

Thank you very much !!!

maxijets are the best powerheads IMO. You will find the 1200s will output a lot of current. In a 40 gallon, you will need to find the right positioning so you dont blow around your sand.

Maxi Jet hands down. Something to note here is that maxijet 1200 use 20 watts and the 900's use 10, so if heat might be a problem the 900's are more economical financially and heat wise.

I'm with Jimbo on this issue. Maxi-jets IMO. For your 40 gallon tank I would most likely suggest the 900's. In my 55 and my 40 gallon breeder tank, I personally found the 400's adequate and would consider 600's if I had it to do all over again and were just using them in my tank on a permenatnt basis. The 1200's would probably be great if you are just trying to provide circulation while curing rock as I prefer vigorous circulation for that undertaking. Rio's in my experience are junk for a number of reasons, you can do a search here and review the "pounding" they have taken! I would highy suggest that you do just that as opposed to taking my word for it. Thats what I started with and yeah I still have a couple left but they have been relegated to pumping water for water changes and mixing salt etc... Its all I trust them for these days.

For in tank pumps/powerheads...Maxi-Jet and Mag Drives is what I use and will recommend. JMHO........
