new here and looking for good info.
We are just starting our first reef tank and would like to get info. and input as we have only had FW until now.
We have a 24 gal. nano tank, and just set it up with red sea water and live sand and rock.
Thanks
Liz

well we just set up the tank with the live sand and rock and used red sea water for it. We were told that if we get bio-spira marina that we will be able to add a small fish or two right away. And then in around two weeks we can add snails and crabs and then 2 weeks later we can add somemore fish. I guess our biggest concern is adding things to soon and killing them. What are some good sites (besides this one) that I can go to to read up on what I need to know.

Welcome to TRT!!
sounds like you may have an iffy LFS (Local Fish Store) near you. i like to recommend not putting anything in a new tank for at least 2 months. this gives the tank time to really cycle and it gives you time to learn how the tank behaves without putting critters in danger.
waiting that long also give the tank time to go through its various critter/algae blooms without you stressing over why the tank looks so bad. all new tanks go through an ugly stage or two in those first couple of months.
do you have a protein skimmer?

no skimmer right now. We were told that with the overflow setup we wouldn't need one. We also just realized that we don't have a heater for it.
I do have a baby green spotted puffer that is fw right now, and is doing to be in the tank when he gets older, if I find that he will do ok in the reef.
As for fish in the sw tank, no, we don't have any right now and I think that we are going to hold off a bit on getting any now.

welcome aboard! i agree with the others. give your live sand and rock time to cycle through completely. read any and everything. not just one source. everyone has differing opinions that work for them. visit other local fish stores if possible and talk to them. i have found that those who work at fish stores that will just talk to you for an hour at a time without trying to sell you something have more to offer.( not a hardfast rule, but generally true in my opinion).
thanks for joining and congrats on the decision to go reef! a journey that is stimulating and frustrating at the same time! but always exciting!
