Caleurpa is a bad idea. why put anything in it. just leave it empty. makes it easier to siphon during water changes. sumps are suppose to be empty. fuges have living stuff in them.

that does not change my answer. you do not want Caleurpa. it can go Holocarpy on you and crash the entire tank. algae leak almost as much phosphates as they absorb so you do not really gain anything by keeping it in the system.

honestly. if you feel you need to put something in it, then just but a DSB in it and plan to replace it once a year.

do you feel you need the extra water volume?

agree the fuge isn't needed. but some people swear by them and there are other algae's that would work. I will leave this to the pros, just wanted to say I had a refugium that came with the tank and I decided after about a week it was a waste of space, cleaned it out, and used the space for additional water volume to the tank. This is one of those personal preference things, and personally I don't like them but you may.

i have run a fuge for years, so i can give you suggestions, it is just not what i would recommend.

if you want a fuge, put about 5" of oolitic sand in it. keep the flow slow through it. the only algae i would use in the fuge would be Chaeto. the least risk of Holocarpy. i would fight the urge to put rocks in there. you do not want to make dead areas in the sand bed.

if you want LR in the fuge than do not put the sand in it.
