Hi Kurt,

Let me be the first to welcome you to Tampa. I've lived in Tampa for a few years. To be honest I don't really know of any places to snorkel near Tampa but I've heard of people going snorkeling off a key in Fort Desoto, cant remember the name of it but if you go to Desoto then look for the Ferry and it takes you to where you can snorkel. Most of the water around Tampa is too murky to see 2 ft in front of your face. That makes me NERVOUS!!! lol If I were you I'd drive down to the keys, Largo especially to snorkel.

The Gulf of Mexico is pretty silty which makes it nearly impossible to see more than a couple of feet down. Still, you can usually find some cool invertebrates in tide pools and shallow waters. Over the years I've manged to catch (in my hand) both a very small puffer and a seahorse during my frequent dips in the Gulf. No one is going to confuse the Gulf of Mexico with the Caribbean, but it has its moments.

Welcome to TRT!!!

not to sure about the tidal pools in the gulf. we usually just went to the PCB area. i do know there are plenty of large sharks off shore though. ohh, i was not suppose to mention that. i usually take my Nacra out and routinely pass over a good 8-10' shark of some kind when sailing around the area. i have been told i need to tell people that they are dolphins.
