New fish, no pics though, read why.

i finally got one of those fish i have always wanted yesterday. the lantern fish (Anomalops katoptron) it is only 2 inches long right now. i will be getting 2-3 more since they are schooling.

i asked the LFS to get me a price on them and they went ahead and ordered one, i saw it and went ahead and got it. they will get me more next week.

all i can say is that it is really cool. i have a deep cave in the tank so that it can hide, and hide it does during the day. i have yet to see it at all during lights on. at night though, seeing its two bio-illuminescent eye-patches flashing around is just really neat. it seems to be eating the frozen foods i put in, it is hard to see though, but its swimming changes when the food hits the water.

i was hoping to take some night shots of it, but the camera can not shoot through the glass with the IR focus. sorry, Jeff.

Hey Jeff! Had no idea what kind of fish you had so went searching and it seems to be a really neat fish! Must be cool to see illuminated eye balls going around in the dark.

i was thinking about snagging a pic from a site to get a pic of it. but i do not like to "borrow" pics without permission. it is amazing how well camoflaged(sp?) it is. when it is swimming you can not see the outline of it at all. even when slightly backlit. all you see are the eye-sacs. it is fast too. it will shine then turn off, and a split secound later it is flashing on the other side of the tank. zooom!

i guess i get excited about weird critters. i figured why stop looking at your tank when the lights go out? other critters come out at night, they need attention also.

hey geoff, just use the insert image command, instead of attachement button. hot link directly to the image on it's original site, and in your message just give the site credit and or a link to the site. that'll alleviate any copyright infringment as long as you arent borrowing the picture for profit

otherwise i gotta go search for this thing on my own, cuz now it sounds way cool!
