New BTA deflated of dead?
Ok here is the scoop. I picked up this bad boy yesterday and he was about 4-5" across fully opened. He was fully opened in the tank yesterday, all day. The clarkii has been rolling around in it and last night he closed up a bit and all night long I was checking on him and the fish was sleeping in it and it stayed about the same size.
This morning and all day the guy has been fully opened and waving with the current in the tank. he is fully attached to a big rock and was looking great. About 1 hour ago I went the store and when I came back he is totally deflated. Nothing is coming out of it. It is like it closed up and deflated its tentacles.
I did some water tests just to make sure and everything is a ok.
Calcium: 390ppm
Alk: 8.4dKh
Sal: 1.026
temp: 77deg
PH: 8.1
Phos: 0 according to my cheap-o test
Ammon: 0
Nitrate: 0
I will get a pic as soon as my camera charges.

Without pix it is hard to tell, but deflation is normal behavior just after eating, did you feed the tank within the last few hours before this happened? Usually any food in the tank makes it into the anemone via the clowns. Regardless, I would not initially worry, as they often do this to clear their gut as well from previous feedings and in response to changes in water composition (salinity, pH, temp, conservative make up).
Not to worry for now, HTH.

I did feed the clarkii's last night and the female would grab some up and go spit it at the BTA. I will get a pic when the light turns green and get it posted.
Thanks for your reply.

Ok much to my suprise the thing is inflated back up and the fish is rolling around in it again as well. I bought some scallops today and cut a piece up a bit bigger then the fish could eat and she grabbed it and took it straight to the BTA and dumped it off. This is so cool. I have never seen any of this stuff in my own tank. It is amazing the way nature does things.
I was also wondering if anybody had some recommended reading on BTA's. i would like to do some more homework on them. Thanks

Joyce Wilkerson's book and Gail (Daphne) Fautin's books on anemones and their host anemonefishes (two books). Look at Amazon or Barnes and Nobels on-line, some of the fish drygood dealers also carry these books.

That is cool. I have a 2 false perc that have paired up and both host their BTA. But, I still haven't observed them feeding the BTA yet.
BTW...my BTA will deflate from time to time....no worries anymore. The first time kinda freaked me out too.

Looks like a little white heart lol. No melting, melting is bad and I have read that innards shooting out of it is a bad sign as well.

They may not have the books at a store, but they do have them on-line.

Tom, after lights out, my BTA does take on a similar shape to that. Not heart shaped but it does kinda "roll up". Its funny watching the clowns try to stay in it like that.
Lemme go check and see if I can get a pic.
