New and have a question

Hi all,
I've been reading this site off and on for quite some time and just learning as much as possible. I love this site for the simple fact that I have never had to ever post due to others posting similar questions I might have had.

About 4 or 5 weeks ago, I bought a piece of LR with a Sun anenome attached to it. Of course the anenome has since vacated the rock and moved else where. Over the course of time I've seen little growth here and there on the rock and have discovered something interesting. There is something living in my rock. It never comes out all the way though, and I would have to break the rock in half to get at it. So I'm hoping you all can help me identify this little guy.

It seems to have what I can count as being 5 tenticles/arms or whatnots. Not all 5 are always out at the same time. I've taken a picture, and its about the best I can get with my camera. I'd love to know if any of you can figure this out. If you look in the rock, around the center is three little grey/white/ and black banded arms stretching out of a hole.

I don't know whether to be excited he's there, or disturbed and find a way to get him out.
Thanks all for your help.

Welcome to TRT!!!

if they seem to move independantly, then i would guess it is some kind of serpent star.

Thanks for your responce Geoff.

Just to let you know. The arms/tenticles are soft, and retract like that of an anenome. I'm not very knowledgible with stars, we do have a brittle star in my hubby's tank, is a serpent star like that of a brittle star?

I have the exact same thing coming from one of my rocks. The arms look like the serpent star I have except my serpent star moves around the tank and this thing seems like it's stuck in the rock.

I swear this thing seems almost like its STUCK in the rock. I have seen it move from one hole to another, but never coming "out" of the rock to get there. I wonder if the rock is poreous and he's able to move through the rock that way, never having to truely leave it.

I've only seen two legs on mine and they've remained in the same place in the rock the week I've noticed them.

Tapsmith, sorry to hijack your post but hopefully we have the same goal. To everyone else, what are they? Are they some sort of worm that looks like serpent star legs or are they serpent stars that are stuck in rocks?

Definitely a serpent star. The other arms are inside the hole holding on so you don't pull him out and eat him. They will come out at night and move from hole to hole. Try some night viewing sessions a few hours after lights out....

yeah, its small serpent star. mine was in one hole of one rock for a long time, then one day it was in a different hole of a different rock.

i have red lights over the tank for night viewing, and finally about a week ago i caught it moving rocks. pretty cool! and...pretty small

for the longest time i had a brittle star that was inside a rock. i only saw one maybe 2 arms. these arms were 6 inches long! it has now moved out of that rock and is out and about. it is way over a foot across, but the central disk is barely and inch around. it just hangs an arm out in the water column and grabs floating food or any that are near it on the ground.

these kind of stars are a good thing.

serpent stars do not have the bristles on their arms. they are smooth. they also have long thin arms compared to the central disc.

Thank you everyone. I am so glad I asked all of you. Your all very helpful and ready to lend a suggestion or opinion, thats wonderful. I hope to learn so much more from all of you.

And that little serpent star is really cute. I never realized they came that small. I love getting in a nice surprise when you bring home LR, I don't like getting the yucky surprises though, those little things that look like lice.. YUCK! I pull two out of my tank on Saturday that a friend of mind found.

Thanks again everyone, you make a gal feel welcomed.

do those lice look like this?

these are great to have pods are a great source of free food for the fish in the tank. besides you would go nuts trying to get them all out!
