need to kill/capture mantis shrimp, help!

I am losing inverts left and right. In the past two months I have probably lost 20-25 red leg hermits and at least as many astrea snails.

My water is fine although my tank is now growing algea with next to nothing to stop it.

My roommate who also has a tank has positively id'd the culprit as a mantis, what's more is he says that it is pretty good size, 1.5" - 2.00".
I do not have any fish or corals so this is something that came with the live rock or the live sand.

I cannot hear any clicking coming from the tank, but with a chiller, an overflow, and a sump the tank is loud.

What can I do to capture any mantis shrimp that may have hitchhiked into my tank? I want it out.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Brett

Thumbs up

a mantis can definetely hitchhike on liverock and they can hide in any tiny crevices!
i think not hearing any snapping doesnt mean you dont have one! (i have never heard any of mine make a snapping noise)
i would look for small piles of sand that might indicate a burrow or small caves in liverock.
if you find any such signs then try and lure it out with a bit of prawn and net it.

you might try putting a piece of stinky shrimp in one of them short nylon stocking and hauling it out when he gets tangled in it

You can use a small 20oz bottle and cut it off at the funnel part and remove the cap. Place it in the sand with a pice of bait in it, the mantis shrip may go in to the hole and not be able to get out. This is a cheaper way to go instead of using a trap which usually doesent work.

Are mantis shrimp that bad? I thought they could be a nice addition to a tank? Is the mantis shrimp the same as a pistol shrimp? I have one in my tank but I added him for a Goby...

Another solution: Octopus! I have a friend that has had his 180g reef tank for 4 years, in it he has an octopus, and it loves crabs, shimp, etc! It cant get the hermits out of there shells, but everything else is fair game!
