Need Help Moving Tanks

Hi Ya'll, Well I finally bought a house so I'll be moving my tanks from my apartment next month. I need help! I have no idea how to do this. I have a 55 and a 125. THe 55 has a 12" V. lionfish and a spinybox puffer and the 125 have a cali stingray and a porc puffer. The 125 gallon has over 200lbs of sand and 80lbs of rock! I have enough 5 gallon bottles for about 60 gallons, so the 55 is not going to be as hard. Do ya'll think on the 125 I can save 60 gallons and add new water for the rest, which with the sump would be around 90 gallons? Also the sand, I don't think I'll be able to lift the tank with all that weight, can I put the sand in buckets and re-use it? I can't go thru a cycle or I'll loose my ray. My ray is very hardy but not that hardy! Also How long can I have these guys in buckets? So for all the questions, I've never moved a tank.

You can say as much water as You want. Get some 45 or 55 gallon brute trash cans,You will be ablr to put livestock in smaller 5 gallon buckets . but the water and rock can be placed in the brutes and moved. Just think about what You want to do plan it and it will bepretty easy. We move tanks from time to time, FO, Reefs and can have them set back up and running the same afternoon. Just get waht You need and plan it out.

Have some water ready to go on the other end just in case. Heaters etc..

go get 4-5 25 gal utility totes
(round buckets with rope handles)

that should keep everyone happy during the move
I've kept my fish in them for up to 48 hours
just add a water pump, air stone, and a heater (if needed)

I would think the sand could be scooped out
moved, and the tanks re-assembled
then let the tanks settle over night and acclimate fish in the morning

do a water change if you have any type of cycle

Im a BB guy but from what Ive read youd be best off to replace the sand as past a certain depth it is toxic is directly exposed to the water. Im sure others will elaborate on this.

Thanks guys. I really want to try and save my sandbed since it takes so long to mature again. Do you think I could lift the tank with 4 guys with all that in it?

How far is it 'tween the old n new place? If it's a short trip , prob will be ok w/ the move,,if it's longer,,say more than a hr, you need to be concerned about things like keeping temps stable,,and prob aeration( battery pumps) also don't feed your fish at least a day b4 you do the move,,,less waste to worry about during the tub/bucket time,,
Save as much water as you can, of the current tanks,,not that you'd want all the water for when you get to the new place,,,just so you have enuf,,,, have some new water(sw) made up at the new place if you can,,aerated/heated etc to what the tanks will be at.Since you will prob be wanting to do a couple of water changes after the new place setup happens.
If you have one,(or borrow from a buddy) a Magnum 350 filter , or the like,,,on the tank after things are setup,,,I suggest Vortez powdered carbon along with some diatom powder w/the micron sleeve,if you are lucky enuf to find the powdered carbon, . if not, go with the canister, and change the carbon in it , prob every day,,,for a few days.
Set up and run thru a schedule on doing the move,,get everything ready well b4 the actual move happens,,so you are not scrambling for things when the time comes.Since something always happens during a move, you want to be as well prepared as you can,,with the less problems the better.
Get your move down pat in your mind, and that will help things go smoothly,,,,,go over what you are planing to do with your moving buddies, let them know what is going to happen,,,and the order in which it'll occur,,so you all are on the same page,,,,last thing you wnat to happen is a "i forgot to do this,,"or what happens next?", with your moving team.
Explain to them (if they are not tank savvy) of what you need them to know about the tank,,on lifting, moving the tanks. let them know about avoiding "torque'ing " the tank while moving it,,lifting equally, bouncing it off the wall etc,,,set the tank on the most level ,stable place during the move as you can,,,a decent piece of plywood, let the board take the flex,,,not the tank,,,
Reverse the procedure putting the tank back in order,,hopefully have a filter running ASAP to clean up the debris from disturbing the substrate etc.,do a few water changes during the first few days,,,don't have to be major ones, just a few lil ones to help things out,,hold off on feeding your stuff the first day or so,,,to help with the water quality while the tank settles in,,,,
Go over in you mind any "what if's" that might happen during the move, so you will be prepared if/when something happens out of the ordinary,,,

Hopefully this might help you for your move,,,

Good luck,,,and get extra people, that had their Wheaties that morning..LOL,,,more muscle, the better,,
Better to have too many strong backs, than not enuf,,,
And NO beer!, until the move is over ,,,,(important rule )

A 125 with sand will be heavy, You can with 4 guys and I have left some sand in a 125 once and moved it, Hard work. The Totes with rope sound good also. You will find that it is not as hard as it seem once you get started
