well you should definately unplug the heater if the water level falls below the heaters appropriate level, or else it will crack from its own heat. i am not sure if that is what you were asking, but you should never have a heater on or hot out of water or you could have a very dangerous situation.

Unplug the heater, let it cool down (just 1-2 minutes), change the water. Leave heater in the tank. If the heater is deep enough in the tank or sump to stay fully covered, you can leave it plugged in.

my ebo jeager heater have some kind of protection that shuts them off when they are above water level. maybe you should try them in case you forget to turn them off first.

what if you just put them down lower in the tank.

good luck,

bill

yeah as long as the heater is off for a couple of minutes before you drain the water you can just leave it in the tank. just make sure its off and you wont blow it up like i did to mine (wasnt pretty) and my cbs is still pissed at me for it!

Dont remember what brand my Heater is, but its a 300 watt Titanium Shaft that lays on the bottom of the substrate or sump. Those hanging Ceramic ones are poo in my opinion.

ill take a quick pic of what mine looks like and post it I recommend this type over all others. But thats my opinion.
